High Court seeks report on dangerous NH-3 stretch near Indore

The Madhya Pradesh High Court asked the Centre for action and a report by December 15 over repeated fatal accidents on the Rau–Khalghat section of NH-3.
Key facts
- The Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the additional solicitor general to initiate appropriate action and file a detailed report by December 15.
- The order came in a PIL by social worker and advocate BL Jain of Sendhwa, heard by justices Vijay Kumar Shukla and Binod Kumar Dwivedi.
- The petition concerns repeated accidents on the Indore–Mumbai National Highway (NH-3), especially the Rau–Khalghat section and the 9-km Bherughat–Bakaner Ghat stretch.
- The PIL says the road gradient was kept at 6 metres per 100 metres, creating a steep slope that causes frequent brake failures in heavy vehicles.
- According to the petition, more than 3,000 accidents occurred on this stretch between 2009 and 2024, causing over 450 deaths and hundreds of serious injuries.
- To reduce accidents, NHAI built an 8.8-km alternative road alongside Bakaner Ghat at a cost of Rs 106 crore.
- The petitioner alleges the new road, built by a Haryana-based company, deteriorated within six months of completion.
- After six inches of rainfall, the road reportedly developed potholes; on September 15, a car hit a dumper while avoiding potholes, killing a 24-year-old from Khargone and injuring two companions.
- The PIL alleges toll was being collected from over 19,000 vehicles daily without a permanent solution from NHAI or the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
- The petition seeks a high-level inquiry, accountability of the company and officials involved, and permanent structural repairs to prevent more accidents.
