Rasipuram Residents Renew Opposition to Bus Stand Relocation
The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
Residents, traders and bus operators oppose moving Rasipuram’s town-centre bus stand 8 km to Anaipalayam, where construction is nearing completion.
Key facts
Rasipuram residents, traders and transport operators renewed opposition to shifting the town-centre bus stand to Anaipalayam, about 8 km away along the Salem-Namakkal National Highway. The proposed site is outside Rasipuram municipality, within a separate village panchayat. The existing stand has served the town for more than five decades; the relocation proposal, citing town traffic congestion, was raised in 2024. The new stand’s foundation stone was laid in November 2024, and construction is nearing completion. About seven acres for the site were obtained free of charge from a private individual. Residents say the move could hurt local livelihoods and inconvenience people travelling from nearby villages. Around 120 shops depend on the existing stand. Bus operators warn route changes would require approvals and could raise fare, permit and insurance issues. The municipality had resolved to begin operating the new stand only after elections. No clear assurance has been given to opponents.
