NGT Seeks Treatment Details for Kanpur Region’s Contamination Victims

The NGT has ordered Uttar Pradesh to report medical treatment and assistance for residents whose blood samples showed chromium or mercury contamination.

Key facts

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed Uttar Pradesh to detail the medical treatment, facilities and assistance provided to each person whose blood samples showed chromium or mercury. The state has six weeks to file its report; the next hearing is scheduled for April 7.

Samples were collected between January 2020 and October 2025 from residents of Rania (Kanpur Dehat), Rakhi Mandi (Kanpur Nagar) and Fatehpur district. The case concerns alleged tannery pollution in Jajmau, contamination in Rania and Rakhi Mandi, and industrial pollution in Godhrauli village, Fatehpur.

The February 3 order was passed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A Senthil Vel. The tribunal allowed amicus curiae Katyayni Chaubey to review compliance reports filed by district magistrates and the state and prepare a comparative table of actions, timelines and progress. National Mission for Clean Ganga executive director (projects) Brijendra Swaroop assured the tribunal of full cooperation.
