Bengaluru Turf Club to Move to Kunigal, Freeing 79 Acres

Karnataka approved moving the Bengaluru Turf Club to Kunigal, while about 79 acres of its central Bengaluru racecourse will become public green space.

  • On February 12, 2026, the Karnataka Cabinet approved relocating the Bengaluru Turf Club (BTC) to Kunigal Stud Farm in Tumakuru district. Horse racing in Bengaluru dates to the late 1800s; BTC was established in 1920. Kunigal Stud Farm traces its origins to Tipu Sultan’s era.
  • BTC will lease 110 acres and 20 guntas for an initial 29 years, with an option to extend for another 29 years. It must complete the move within two years and pay annual rent equal to 2.5% of the land’s guidance value.
  • BTC must also deposit 2% of its annual income from 2010 onwards with the Public Works Department, addressing revenue losses from lease payments that were not revised during the dispute.
  • BTC will retain 4 acres of its existing 83-acre High Grounds site, including its heritage office and clubhouse. The remaining approximately 79 acres will be preserved as public green space.

The Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) will move from Race Course Road, Bengaluru, to the 110-acre Kunigal Stud Farm within two years, following a cabinet decision on Thursday. The existing 83-acre club site will be protected as lung space. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil said the state had lost revenue for 15 years because the lease amount was not revised; pending dues will be recovered, along with a penalty equal to 2% of BTC’s revenue during that period. A government order is expected shortly.

The cabinet also authorised the law department to study the Election Commission’s proposed special intensive revision and report by February 28; it made no decision on consent. Other decisions included a one-time settlement for stone quarry owners in royalty and penalty arrears, and retaining permanent agricultural-zone status for 1,777 acres across 13 villages near Devanahalli.
