Fire Guts PBEL City Flat After Gas Leak and Compressor Blast

A fire destroyed an 11th-floor flat at PBEL City in Thaiyur after an LPG leak, injuring one resident and prompting tower evacuation.
Key facts
A fire broke out around 9.45 pm on Wednesday in an 11th-floor flat in the Argent block at PBEL City, a residential complex in Thaiyur near Kelambakkam on OMR. Police said an LPG cylinder leak and explosion started the fire; residents said a fridge compressor also exploded, while an electrical short circuit is suspected of spreading the flames. Household items, furniture, clothes and silk sarees were destroyed. One of the three family members in the flat suffered minor burns and was admitted to a private hospital in Kelambakkam. Three women residents helped the family evacuate. More than 20 firefighters from Siruseri, Tiruporur and Kovalam brought the fire under control after over two hours. Power to the affected tower was disconnected; residents descended staircases in darkness using phone flashlights. PBEL City has multiple towers and over 2,000 families. Kelambakkam police registered a case and are investigating.
