The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is operationalising a mega material recovery facility (MRF) at Palasuni by June-end 2025. The facility sits on approximately 10 acres and will process 150 tonnes of dry waste per day in a single shift, expandable to two shifts.
The city generates 810 tonnes of waste daily, of which 400 tonnes is dry waste. Currently, 110 tonnes is processed at 22 small MRFs across the city, and 290 tonnes is processed at the Gadakana temporary transit centre (TTS).
Once the Palasuni facility is operational, the remaining 290 tonnes will be diverted there and processed in two shifts daily. The facility uses advanced technology to minimise foul smell.
The project was originally planned to meet a May 2023 deadline for stopping waste transport to Bhuasuni dump yard from the TTS near Sainik School. The BMC obtained approval from the Housing and Urban Development department and NOC from the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO). Construction delays prevented earlier completion.
