Spent mushroom compost mixed with rainwater is making parts of Ketti Palada in Adhigaratty, near Coonoor, impassable, particularly in Colony Mattam, a residential area home mostly to agricultural labourers. Residents walk to Ketti to catch buses to work and schools and reach basic amenities.
Large landowners pile bags of spent compost beside roads for sale to other farms. During heavy rain, water seeps through the bags and floods the road between Ketti Palada and Colony Mattam. Residents say the compost also attracts flies and other pests, increasing illness risks, and flooded roads hinder people without private vehicles from obtaining provisions and accessing healthcare and schools. They have asked the Nilgiris district administration to direct owners to store compost in sheds away from public roads. Revenue Department officials said they would inspect the area and consider action.
