Tamil Nadu is advancing acquisition of 217 acres in Manappakkam, Kolappakkam and Kaul Bazaar for Chennai airport’s expansion, with the work in its final stage. An office is expected at the Alandur taluk office; district revenue officers and other officials have been assigned. The government has yet to instruct officials on selecting and acquiring any additional land.

A 2007 government order identified 1,069.99 acres in Manappakkam, Kolappakkam, Kerugambakkam and Tharapakkam. After the Airports Authority of India did not proceed with the land, 852.88 acres were released from the acquisition proposal in 2011; the remaining 217 acres stayed in the process.

The government shifted focus to expanding the existing airport at Meenambakkam after dropping the proposed Parandur airport. That project envisaged a 5,600-acre airport through a public-private partnership, received administrative approval in October 2023, and involved the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation acquiring about 3,700 acres from landowners, farmers and village residents. Rising passenger and cargo traffic at Chennai airport is driving the expansion need. No compensation, construction schedule or final design and capacity were provided.

Sriperumbudur and Oragadam form part of the western Chennai industrial belt, with demand tied to manufacturing, electronics, logistics and employment. SIPCOT lists Sriperumbudur Industrial Park & SEZ, Oragadam Industrial Park, Irungattukottai Industrial Park and Pillaipakkam Industrial Park. Companies and operations associated with the region include Hyundai Motor India, Renault/Nissan, Daimler, Foxconn, Samsung and Saint-Gobain.

Indicative Sriperumbudur prices:

• Apartments: ₹3,400–₹4,750 per sq.ft.; some sources put the average at about ₹3,900 per sq.ft.
• Residential plots or land: approximately ₹1,500–₹2,650 per sq.ft. in some market sources.

Prices vary by locality, project, approval status, road access, development quality and property type; asking prices may differ from registered transaction prices. The guide advises checking the applicable planning authority and distinguishing existing infrastructure from projects under development or proposed. Sriperumbudur is on the NH48 Chennai–Bengaluru corridor; Oragadam has an industrial road network. Rental demand is employment-driven, and the guide describes the investment horizon as medium to long term.

The Greater Chennai Corporation will divert around 700 Vinayaka idols from planned immersion sites at Palavakkam and Pattinapakkam: 450 from Palavakkam to Kovalam and 250 from Pattinapakkam to Ennore. The decision followed concerns that Pattinapakkam and Neelankarai fall within the CRZ-I area, and discussions about the practical implications of excluding them.

The Corporation had initially identified Pattinapakkam, Thiruvottiyur, Kasimedu and Palavakkam as immersion locations. After concerns that some may lie in a CRZ-prohibited area, the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority was asked to examine the sites and identify alternatives. The Corporation cited procession routes, traffic, police deployment, public safety, emergency access and possible law-and-order difficulties as concerns.

The National Green Tribunal directed compliance with CPCB guidelines and prior orders of the Tribunal, Supreme Court and Madras High Court. Coastal immersion sites require CRZ clearance from the TNSCZMA; officials’ participation in meetings does not constitute clearance. The State must file an affidavit assuring compliance next year; it sought time after failing to file it on Thursday. The NGT ordered compliance this year too. The Corporation will coordinate traffic, crowd management, safe immersion and waste removal.

The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed Tamil Nadu authorities to reconsider using Pattinapakkam and Neelankarai in Chennai for idol procession and immersion. Both locations fall within Coastal Regulation Zone-I (CRZ-I) and may not be permissible. The NGT identified six idol immersion locations in Chennai; two fall within CRZ-I. The bench comprising Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Prashant Gargava directed authorities to split these locations and attach them to any of the other four designated sites. The NGT appreciated state government efforts on environmental awareness for idol immersion and directed further sensitization on protecting coastal zones and marine ecosystems. The direction followed status reports from District Collectors, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and Greater Chennai Corporation. The state government agreed to convene a meeting before immersion to discuss and report back. Matter posted to September 16.

NHAI plans a 23km, six-lane double-decker elevated corridor from Mahindra City to Kilambakkam bus terminus, with a toll plaza. Peak travel time is expected to fall from about 90 minutes to 15–20 minutes. NHAI will build it first and construct central pillars, piers and pier caps for a possible double-decker metro; the state proposal has gone to the Centre, and Metro would later install girders, tracks and electrification.

A planned 15km, six-lane greenfield expressway from Pakkam village to Paranur will connect to the Kancheepuram–Chengalpet highway junction, pass through Uthiramerur and cross the Palar river. The other expressway is expected to cut Tindivanam–Chengalpet travel from 1.5 hours to about 30 minutes, and Tindivanam–Kilambakkam travel to about an hour.

NHAI has proposed widening the 68km Chengalpet–Tindivanam stretch into a 10-lane corridor, with six main lanes and two service lanes. It awaits environmental clearance because of hillock areas after Paranur. The widening is intended to serve Chennai-bound traffic for 30 years; the greenfield road could be extended towards Tindivanam and beyond.
