Residents of Olympia Opaline in Navalur report intermittent ammonia-type odours in evenings, affecting multiple communities on OMR; source unknown.

Uday Kapoor, resident of Olympia Opaline's 14th floor in Navalur, reports experiencing an ammonia-type odour intermittently over the past year, occurring in evenings (6 p.m. onwards) or nights when wind blows south to north. The smell reminds him of a factory odour from his college days near Chromepet. Two weeks ago the odour intensified, prompting discussion in the community WhatsApp group where many residents confirmed experiencing it. The odour is also reported by residents in Egattur, Siruseri, and Kelambakkam communities on the OMR belt. Residents of Eden Park in Siruseri report the smell around 4 p.m., intermittently, primarily affecting flats facing Kelambakkam. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has established an air monitoring system in Kelambakkam. P. Suresh, manager of Olympia Opaline Owners Association, attributes the smell partly to a garbage transit point near Buckingham Canal (operated by Navalur panchayat but within Muttukadu panchayat limits) where garbage accumulates and is cleared monthly, with JCBs churning garbage causing odours. He also notes garbage burning in Kanathur on the ECR side contributes to the problem. Complaints to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board have had limited impact. Some residents believe the odour is unrelated to the nearby garbage transit point. Uday has installed a device to measure organic compounds in the air to identify the source.
