Damaged Storm Drains Threaten Residents in Old Washermanpet

Storm drains on M.S. Naidu Street and at Ramanuja Kudam have caved in, while streetlights are dysfunctional on Thiruneermalai’s bypass service road.

Key facts

The Greater Chennai Corporation built a storm water drain in the middle of narrow M.S. Naidu Street, Old Washermanpet. Part of it caved in two months ago, threatening pedestrians and motorists; the civic body installed a barricade after residents complained. Another poorly built drain caved in at Ramanuja Kudam, where the pit has been covered with a cement bag. A month after a complaint, neither drain had been repaired. A senior Corporation official referred the complaint to the Tondiarpet Zone Assistant Commissioner for immediate repairs and action against the contractor.

Streetlights are dysfunctional on the Maduravoyal-Irumbuliyur Bypass service road at Thiruneermalai, used by hundreds of vehicles travelling to Thirumudivakkam’s industrial hub. Hundreds of workers returning home from industrial units at night face hardship; the Highways Department was asked to repair the lights.
