Delhi Prepares for the Commonwealth Games: A Look at the Commonwealth Village
As Delhi gears up to host the Commonwealth Games, all eyes are on the Commonwealth Village, designed to accommodate over 8,000 athletes. This state-of-the-art facility is a collaborative effort between Emaar MGF and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
Strategically located near the renowned Akshardham Temple, the village offers convenient access to both South and Central Delhi. Spread across 27 acres, the complex comprises 34 towers housing 1,168 flats, ranging from 2 to 5 bedrooms, and boasts five-star amenities.
Amenities and Features
Residents of the village will enjoy access to a wealth of amenities, including:
- Lush green lawns
- A competition-sized swimming pool
- A world-class health club with a fully equipped gymnasium
- Tennis and basketball courts
- A children's crèche and play area
Initial plans proposed repurposing the village as a Delhi University hostel after the games. However, this plan appears to be on hold for the time being.

Going Green
A key highlight of the Commonwealth Village is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The buildings have received a "Green" certification. On Saturday, the Chief Minister inaugurated a 66/11 kV grid sub-station, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the village. Constructed by the power distribution company BYPL in a record 13 months, the sub-station represents a Rs. 40 crore investment.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Commonwealth Games would be a "memorable event and will be able to showcase Delhi as a developed, historical, modern and vibrant city."
Environmental Concerns
Despite the excitement surrounding the Games, environmentalists have voiced concerns about the construction of such large-scale buildings on the banks of the Yamuna River. They argue that the village could disrupt groundwater flow, which replenishes the river, potentially exacerbating water shortages in the city.
Amidst the preparations for the games, the environmental impact remains a concern for many, leaving the city's residents to observe and hope for the best.
