Builders Cancel Strike Following Dialogue with Government
Mumbai builders have decided to call off their planned strike scheduled for May 3.
Background of the Strike
The Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI) and the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) had proposed a one-day token strike. Their protest centered on the delay in project approvals and the State Government's move to establish a housing regulator.
The Builders Association of India also decided to join the strike. During a media address on Wednesday, Mr. Paras Gundecha, President of the association, announced that the Chief Minister, Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, met with the members on Tuesday. He assured them that all issues concerning the builders would be addressed.
Key Points Raised
Mr. Gundecha stated that MCHI made a presentation to Mr. Chavan on the challenges faced by developers. The association sought a single-window clearance system for housing projects. The Chief Minister emphasized that the government's priority is to build affordable housing stock.
The strike was intended to highlight the obstacles faced by the building industry, including bureaucratic delays and regulatory burdens. However, the constructive dialogue with the Chief Minister has led to a resolution, avoiding the need for a strike.
