McDonald's to invest Rs.265 Cr for expansion

McDonald's India Unveils Ambitious Expansion Strategy

McDonald's plans to expand its stores in India.

McDonald's, a globally recognized name synonymous with hamburgers and pizzas, enjoys immense popularity among fast-food enthusiasts. Serving approximately 68 million customers daily across the globe, this prominent hamburger fast-food restaurant chain operates in over 119 countries.

Expansion Plans for South and West India

McDonald's India, a subsidiary of the American fast-food giant, is embarking on a significant expansion journey. The company aims to increase its footprint to 250 stores across South and West India by March 2015, a notable increase from the current 162 stores in those regions.

Amit Jatia, Vice-chairman of Hardcastle Restaurants, the operator for McDonald's operations in South and West India, confirmed these ambitious plans. "The group plans to have 250 stores in these regions," stated Jatia, further elaborating that a substantial investment of ₹265 crore will fuel this expansion.

Investment and Regional Focus

The estimated investment for each new store, excluding real estate costs, is approximately ₹3 crore. McDonald's India already boasts a considerable presence with numerous stores in major metropolitan areas like Mumbai and Thane, extending its reach across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and recently, Kerala.

Reinforcing the commitment to the store cluster strategy, which emphasizes concentrated store locations within close proximity, Mr. Jatia confirmed the addition of more stores in Kerala. This strategic approach allows McDonald's to effectively cater to localized demand and optimize operational efficiencies.

Enhanced Production Capabilities and Localized Flavors

To support its ambitious expansion, McDonald's has invested in two new plants, one in Bangalore and another in North India. These additions have effectively tripled McDonald's bun production capacity, and a third plant is slated to open in Bangalore soon. With the company's growing focus on offering localized flavors that resonate with Indian consumers, McDonald's continues to enhance its menu offerings with a diverse range of flavors that cater to local tastes, all starting at an attractive price point of just ₹25. This accessible pricing strategy, combined with the expansion plans, promises to bring a wider variety of pizzas and burgers to the Indian market.
