Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to announce 12 land parcels, one in each administrative zone, for waste-processing facilities, nearly two months after the Moshi landfill collapse. The city generates about 1,400–1,500 metric tonnes of waste daily. Moshi is currently the only facility processing or dumping waste from across Pimpri Chinchwad. PCMC commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi said the locations would be announced this week after discussions with local corporators. Under the proposed model, waste would be processed within its respective zone, reducing pressure on the Moshi facility and waste transportation across the city.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to decentralise waste processing after a garbage mound collapsed onto the administrative building of the outsourced waste-to-energy plant at Moshi, killing nine staff. The incident led to an 84-hour rescue operation, suspended civic officials, departmental inquiries and disrupted waste handling, affecting door-to-door collection.

Moshi depot, operational since 1991, receives over 1,500 metric tonnes of waste daily. PCMC estimates the twin city’s population will rise from 35–40 lakh to 55 lakh by 2041 and one crore by 2055. At 500–600 grams per person daily, waste generation is projected at 2,200 tonnes in five years, 3,300 in 10 years and nearly 5,800 in 20 years.

The depot holds nearly 34 lakh cubic metres of waste. Officials cite 12 lakh cubic metres biomined, 28 lakh of legacy waste and six lakh of fresh waste. SLF-2 has accumulated 10–12 lakh cubic metres since 2014–15; its mound reached 25–30 metres, above the prescribed limit.

A 22-hectare facility planned at Survey No. 24, Punawale, in 2008 stalled for over 15 years and was scrapped in December 2023 after resident opposition. PCMC paid the forest department ₹3.5 crore for the land in exchange for alternative land. The corporation will consider vacant municipal land and sites owned by neighbouring planning authorities. The commissioner said Moshi’s odour mainly comes from legacy waste.

Amid pressure from political parties and activists, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi on Sunday directed senior officials to issue notices to civic officials and a waste-to-energy firm following the Moshi tragedy.

On September 30, 2026, PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary and Additional Metropolitan Commissioner K. Manjulakshmi shared project updates at the authority’s Akurdi headquarters.

• Of the 23 stations on the 23-km Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, the stretch covering 17 stations has CMRS approval. Remaining technical work is due in 10–12 days, before passenger services begin.
• A ₹426-crore last-mile connectivity project for IT parks will be funded equally by PMRDA and MIDC.
• Work on seven Chakan roads is expected to finish by November–December; land acquisition is underway for four more.
• Around 6,500 homes at Moshi Sector 12 are expected to be completed by December 2026, with a lottery draw planned. PMAY-2 will include at least one affordable housing project in every taluka. Pay-and-park will be introduced in Moshi Sectors 11 and 12.
• River works will intercept 95 drains entering the Indrayani and 15 entering the Pawana, treating wastewater at sewage treatment plants. Tenders are at technical evaluation.
• Since January 2026, PMRDA has removed 153 unauthorised hoardings and 919 unauthorised constructions. It will establish an encroachment squad; permissions are fully online.

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) cleared five additional stations on Pune Metro Line 3 on September 23, bringing the number approved for passenger operations to 17 of the corridor’s 23 stations. The first 12 had received provisional authorisation. Technical requirements are expected to be completed within 10 to 12 days; the inauguration decision remains pending. PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijeet Chaudhary announced the update at PMRDA headquarters in Akurdi, with Additional Metropolitan Commissioner K Manjulakshmi present.

PMRDA and MIDC will share equally the ₹426-crore cost of a Hinjewadi last-mile connectivity project. Since January 2026, PMRDA has removed 153 unauthorised hoardings and 919 unauthorised structures and plans an anti-encroachment squad. It will introduce paid authorised parking in Moshi sectors 11 and 12.

Seven roads in the Chakan decongestion plan are under construction, due for completion in November-December; land acquisition is underway for four others. Bypass and Mahalunge road acquisition proposals went to the district collector.

PMRDA targets about 6,500 affordable homes in Moshi sector 12 by December 2026, followed by a beneficiary draw, and plans at least one affordable project in every taluka around future growth hubs under PMAY 2. River improvement projects will divert 95 drains from the Indrayani and 15 from the Pavana for treatment before discharge; tenders are under technical evaluation, with work orders after the model code of conduct ends. PMRDA is moving permission processes online.
