Delhi BJP MLAs Seek New Names for Three Areas

moneycontrol.com · · Regulatory

Three BJP MLAs have sought to rename Najafgarh, Mohammadpur and Mustafabad, with proposals ranging from Madhavpuram to Shiv Vihar.

Key facts

Three BJP MLAs called for renaming Delhi areas: Najafgarh to Nahargarh, Mohammadpur to Madhavpuram, and Mustafabad to Shiv Vihar or Shivpuri.

Najafgarh MLA Neelam Pahalwan said residents had faced oppression under Mughal rule and cited Raja Nahar Singh’s role during the 1857 revolt. Najafgarh was named after Mirza Najaf Khan, commander-in-chief under Shah Alam II in the 18th century.

RK Puram MLA Anil Sharma said a municipal corporation proposal to rename Mohammadpur village had been passed earlier but remained pending in the Assembly. He said residents wanted the change. Mohammadpur was named after Lodi-era landlord Mohammad Khan.

Mustafabad deputy speaker and MLA Mohan Singh Bisht said a census would be conducted before the area’s name was changed. He claimed official figures put Muslims at 45%, while his estimate was 60% Muslims and 40% Hindus. Bisht defeated AAP candidate Adeel Ahmad Khan by 17,578 votes.

Delhi BJP MLAs Seek Renaming of Mohammadpur and Other Areas

Mint · · Regulatory

Delhi BJP MLAs have proposed renaming Najafgarh, Mohammadpur and Mustafabad, with Mohammadpur’s proposed new name being Madhavpuram.

Key facts

BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan submitted a proposal to the Delhi Assembly on February 27, 2025, to rename Najafgarh as Nahargarh, saying it would honour Raja Nahar Singh, who fought in the 1857 revolt. She defeated AAP candidate Tarun Kumar by more than 29,000 votes. Pahalwan said the name had been altered by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb; she also cited Shah Alam II’s control of the area.

RK Puram MLA Anil Sharma said he would again seek to rename Mohammadpur village as Madhavpuram, citing public demand. The municipal corporation had previously passed the proposal, but it remained pending in the Assembly under the former AAP government.

Mohan Singh Bisht has said he would rename Mustafabad as Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar. The North-East Delhi constituency, which is Muslim-majority, was severely affected by the 2020 communal riots. Bisht, a four-time Karawal Nagar MLA, won it by more than 17,500 votes, defeating AAP’s Adeel Ahmad.
