Heavy monsoon showers flooded the Millennium Towers area in Sector 10, Sanpada, with residents and activists blaming construction and loss of wetlands and mangroves.
Key facts
The first heavy monsoon showers on 21 July 2024 flooded the Millennium Towers area in Sector 10, Sanpada, for the first time in over two decades, with water reaching knee level. The tower area, surrounding roads and a public park were inundated. Millennium Towers, a mini township of 13 towers and row houses with 1,200 flats, was affected; water entered some lift areas, and senior citizens faced difficulties accessing their homes.
NatConnect director B N Kumar blamed indiscriminate construction and environmental-norm violations, saying mangroves, mudflats and wetlands had been buried. A large public park and ground opposite the towers is listed as a wetland on the Indian Wetlands map prepared by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. A nearby holding pond used for flood mitigation is threatened by debris dumping, with part converted into a playground.
