Heavy rains suspend Mumbai-Pune Expressway traffic

Landslides and flooding near the Missing Link and Bhor Ghat halted traffic on the expressway and old highway between Pune and Mumbai.

Key facts

Heavy rainfall caused a landslide near Tunnel 2 on the Khopoli-Kusgaon Missing Link, diverting traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway from 4 am Monday.
Traffic on both the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old Pune-Mumbai highway was suspended until further notice.
Police said flood-like conditions developed in parts of Maval and Tamhini Ghat; the expressway was closed between the Connecting Link and Missing Link sections after a concrete pillar fell on the carriageway.
The old highway was shut because of overflowing water at multiple locations.
A landslide also occurred at Patan village near Lohgad Fort; a family was reportedly trapped and a rescue operation was launched.
The Pune district administration declared a holiday for all schools.
The recently opened 13-km Missing Link bypass cuts through the Sahyadri mountains, reducing travel distance by 6 km and commute time by 25 to 30 minutes.
A motorist said Mumbai-bound traffic from Sangli was stuck near Lonavala since 4 am and the expressway section passing through Lonavala city was bumper-to-bumper.
Khandala Ghat traffic was also disrupted due to waterlogging and landslides.
Train services on the Mumbai-Pune route were suspended after landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section.
Landslides were reported near Thakurwadi and on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at 3.05 am.
All three railway lines in the ghat section were affected, leading Central Railway to cancel, divert, regulate, short-terminate and short-originate several long-distance trains.
Cancelled trains included CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express and Dhule Express.
Pune-CSMT Sinhagad Express and other trains were also cancelled.
