Fire Destroys 80 Shanties in Delhi’s Matiala Cluster

A fire gutted about 80 shanties across nearly four acres in Matiala, southwest Delhi; all residents were evacuated and no casualties were reported.

Key facts

A fire broke out near the fish market in Matiala’s jhuggi cluster and adjoining waste-material warehouses at 11.54 pm on Wednesday, March 11. Police received a call from the Mansaram Park area at 11.57 pm and helped evacuate residents. More than 23 fire tenders were initially deployed, rising to about 28; the blaze was controlled around 3 am on Thursday, March 12, and cooling operations followed. The shanties, made of bamboo, tarpaulin and plastic sheets, were destroyed; waste heaps, including plastics, also burned. No casualties were reported. Police said a similar fire occurred at the site on March 7, when eight fire tenders extinguished the flames and a case was registered. The land is privately owned, but ownership is disputed. Authorities had postponed a planned debris-removal drive on March 7 due to logistical issues; the district administration and Municipal Corporation of Delhi plan to clear the debris. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
