Reay Road–Wadala-Mahul Route Has Over 150 Potholes Despite Tolls

Motorists pay up to ₹90 on Mumbai’s Reay Road–Wadala-Mahul route, where over 150 potholes and a bridge closure are causing safety concerns and diversions.

More than 150 potholes affect a 5–6 km stretch of the Reay Road–Wadala-Mahul route. Nearly 1 km is closed because the bridge over Kharu Creek was found weak, forcing diversions. The affected roads—from Mallet Road Junction to Victoria Overbridge (Reay Road) and the Wadala-Mahul Road—are under the Mumbai Port Authority (MBPA).

MBPA tolls are ₹40 for cars and three-wheelers, ₹60 for trucks and buses, and ₹90 for trailers. More than 500 heavy vehicles and hundreds of other vehicles use the route daily. Transporters report slower traffic, vehicle-damage and accident risks, increased fuel and repair costs, congestion and longer journeys. The closed section is being used to park cranes and oil tankers, prompting concerns that their weight could further strain the bridge. Maharashtra Transport Action Committee coordinator Raman Khosla said the chairman had assured transporters the road would be repaired before Ganpati immersion; transporters are seeking a permanent solution.

Mogra and Mahul Pumping Stations Delayed by Land and Clearances

Mumbai’s Mogra pumping station awaits environmental clearance, while land acquisition disputes continue to delay the Mahul station, both intended to reduce flooding.

The BMC has not begun construction on its Mogra and Mahul pumping stations, two of eight projects recommended by the Chitale Committee after the 2005 Mumbai deluge.

Mogra: The tender was finalised in 2021, but a private ownership dispute delayed land acquisition. The BMC submitted ₹33 crore to the Bombay High Court as directed; Administrator Bhushan Gagrani approved the project, and a work order has been issued. Construction awaits Ministry of Environment and Forests clearance. The contract period is 24 months, including the monsoon. The station aims to alleviate flooding in Versova, Andheri and Jogeshwari.
Mahul: The BMC has yet to acquire salt pan land or obtain environmental clearances. The Salt Commissioner’s policy allows public-sector projects to acquire land at 10% of its value, reducing the BMC’s cost to ₹14 crore from an earlier estimate of ₹118 crore. Another occupant seeks 25% compensation based on a ₹100 crore valuation; discussions continue. The station aims to address waterlogging in Kurla, Sion, Matunga and Chembur.

At high tide, floodgates close to keep seawater out; pumping stations drain water into the sea. Irla in Juhu was commissioned in 2010, followed by Haji Ali, Cleveland, Lovegrove in Worli, Reay Road–Britannia and Gajdharbandh at Khar Danda.
