Mylkal Flyover Delay Raises Doubts Over Coimbatore Ring Road Phases
New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
The Mylkal flyover is under 25% complete, while a government review has delayed tenders and the start of Phase II of Coimbatore’s Western Ring Road.
Key facts
Coimbatore’s 32.43-km, four-lane Western Ring Road will connect Mylkal on Salem-Cochin Road (SHU 52) to Narasimhanaickenpalayam on Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road (NH 67), passing through 15 revenue villages. Planned in three phases, Phase I covers 11.80 km through Madukkarai, Sundakkamuthur, Perur Chettipalayam, Theethipalayam and Madampatti. Launched in August 2023, it was completed in February 2026 at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore and inaugurated by former Chief Minister MK Stalin on March 13. Its 800-metre Mylkal flyover, intended to ease congestion at the Palakkad Main Road junction, remains under 25% complete despite work starting in May 2025; only two deck slabs have been built. Underground water and drainage pipelines required relocation, while rocky terrain delayed excavation and foundations. Basement work has begun on one side, and officials aim to finish within four months. Phase II covers 12.10 km through Perur, West Chithirai Chavadi, Kallikanaicken Palayam, Vadavalli and Somayampalayam. Tenders and projects announced by the previous DMK administration are suspended for review by the TVK government; it will decide when Phase II begins.
Coimbatore Residents Seek Faster Completion of Siruvani Main Road Four-Laning
The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
Coimbatore residents are urging faster completion of the ₹33.8-crore four-laning project on Siruvani Main Road, where nearly 70% of work is done.
Key facts
The 5.2-kilometre Siruvani Main Road, connecting Kalampalayam to Madampatti and linking Coimbatore with Kerala’s Siruvani Dam, is being widened into a four-lane carriageway with a central median. The road serves Perur Patteeshwarar Temple, Poondi Velliangiri Andavar Temple, Aavin Dairy Farm, Karunya University and Isha Yoga Centre, among other destinations. Rising traffic has contributed to frequent accidents.
The Tamil Nadu government sanctioned ₹33.8 crore after approving a Detailed Project Report prepared by State Highways officials in Coimbatore Division. Work began a few months ago; nearly 70% is complete. Residents report dusty conditions and sections awaiting asphalt after wet-mix surfacing. Officials cited removal of decades-old trees and the Siruvani underground water-supply pipeline as causes of delay, and said remaining work is planned for completion within about a month. Phase I of the Western Ring Road is scheduled to open next month, potentially increasing traffic on Siruvani Main Road.
