Puducherry Plans Two 50 MVA Power Substations

Puducherry is building a 50 MVA substation in Lawspet and tendering another in Thavalakuppam to improve power supply and support new demand.

Key facts

Puducherry is constructing 50 MVA, 110/22 kV substations in Lawspet and Thavalakuppam. Work has begun on the ₹78.80-crore gas-insulated substation in Lawspet; tendering for the ₹92.26-crore Thavalakuppam substation is underway. Power Grid Corporation of India is executing both projects for the Puducherry Electricity Department.

Lawspet currently receives power from Kurumampet Substation, while Thavalakuppam is served by Kirumampakkam Substation; both are about 8 km away. The new facilities are expected to improve voltage, reduce transmission losses, enhance power quality and meet additional demand.

The department is also undertaking ₹106.53 crore of power-supply augmentation under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, including aerial bundled cables, capacitor banks and energy-efficient distribution transformers. Smart-meter installation under the scheme, costing ₹383 crore, is progressing. By July, 1,07,313 domestic, 17,476 commercial, 8,562 government and 351 industrial meters had been installed. Completion is expected by next year.
