Planned as modern integrated bus terminal with improved passenger amenities, traffic management systems, seamless connectivity to major highways. Strategic location near Thirumazhisai expected to reduce commuter travel time and minimize city bottlenecks. Will serve routes toward western and northern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. Designed to complement existing infrastructure and support Chennai's expanding transport network and future urban growth.

The new mofussil terminus at Kuthambakkam, built by CMDA at Rs 427 crore cost, is expected to be inaugurated in March. Located near Thirumazhisai on Chennai-Bengaluru NH, 8.5 km from Poonamallee and 23.5 km from CMBT, 8 km from Thiruninravur railway station.

MTC will shift all 150 buses from Poonamallee depot to Kuthambakkam, with 170 total MTC buses to operate from the new terminus. The Poonamallee depot will convert to maintenance hub for 120 electric buses. TNSTC and SETC buses to Vellore, Krishnagiri, Walajah, Hosur, Tirupattur and Bengaluru will shift from CMBT to Kuthambakkam.

Poonamallee depot currently handles ~1,000 arrivals and 1,000 departures daily to Avadi, Broadway, Tambaram, Redhills, CMBT and other areas. 10 new buses to be introduced between CMBT and Kuthambakkam, and 10 from KCBT to Kuthambakkam. Route 66 (Tambaram-Poonamallee-Kundrathur) will be extended to Kuthambakkam. New service from Kuthambakkam to KCBT via outer ring road. Routes 202/206 (KCBT-Avadi) will be rerouted via outer ring road. Route 104C buses increased from 10 to 30. Bus routes to be tweaked for improved Thiruninravur railway station connectivity.

The Kuthambakkam bus terminus, spread across 25 acres near Thirumazhisai, costs Rs 427 crore and is 80% complete for March 2025 opening. It will host over 200 buses with AC lounges, omni bus bays, parking for 1,700 two-wheelers, and a food court. It will ease congestion at Poonamallee and Kilambakkam terminuses and cater to buses traveling west from Chennai. In phase one, omni buses to Bangalore, Dharmapuri and northern Tamil Nadu will be shifted to Kuthambakkam. A separate omni bus stand is under construction in Mudichur, opening in the third week of December. Koyambedu bus stand will gradually cease operations by end of year as the area is redeveloped with residential buildings, IT companies and sports projects. Reports suggest a major IT company may be established in Koyambedu, with land survey tests expected soon and announcement within two months.
