Kumily hit by 18 landslips from heavy rain

Torrential rain caused over 18 landslips in Kumily, Idukki, destroying cardamom crops and causing widespread property damage and waterlogging.

Key facts

Over 18 major and minor landslips occurred in Kumily grama panchayat on Friday and Saturday from torrential rain. Damage reported in Pathumury, Attappallam, Kumily, Murukkady, Valiyakandam, and Vellaramkunnu. Waterlogging affected hundreds of houses and shops in Kumily and Onnam Mile towns.

Attappallam alone saw 11 major and minor landslips. One cardamom planter lost crops on 1 acre of his 1.3-acre plantation. Vellaramkunnu recorded 228.3 mm rainfall in 48 hours.

Crop loss data from Agriculture department for Nedumkandam, Karunapuram, Vandanmedu, Chakkupallom, Kumily, Erattayar, Kanchiyar, Vathikkudy, Kattappana, and Edavetty areas: ₹1.47 crore on 81.44 hectares. Cardamom sector loss: ₹44.7 lakh on 57.82 hectares.

Kumily town, a tourism hub and Sabarimala stopover, experienced heavy waterlogging causing damages worth lakhs to establishments on Kottarakkara-Dindigul National Highway. Merchants Association blocked the highway demanding solution to recurring waterlogging.

One death reported: Parappallil Thomas, 66, killed when debris fell on his two-wheeler on Kumily-Anavilasom-Kattappana road near Vellaramkunnu on Saturday.

District Collector issued red alert and declared educational institution holiday. Water and adventure tourism activities banned. All 13 spillway shutters of Mullaperiyar dam open, releasing 6,033 cusecs. Dam water level: 138.5 ft on Tuesday morning.

Adimaly-Kumily highway gets revised alignment nod

Union ministry approves revised NH 185 alignment between Adimaly and Kumily in Idukki with reduced width to control costs.

NH 185 stretch connecting Adimaly and Kumily in Idukki has received Union road transport and highways ministry approval for revised alignment. MP Dean Kuriakose said project expected to receive final administrative sanction after standing finance committee approval, likely next week.

Rs 350 crore already allocated for land acquisition and procedures including 3A notification and boundary stone installation are progressing.

Right of way reduced from 30m to 18m to control costs following review indicating substantial cost increases. Highway will be developed as two-lane road with paved shoulders, enabling project to proceed at ministry level without Union cabinet approval.

Estimated costs:

Civil construction: Rs 810 crore
Land acquisition: Rs 700 crore

Existing Adimaly-Kumily NH 185 stretch: 92km. Revised alignment total length: 79km.

Adimaly bypass will remain part of project per NHAI assurances to MP.
