Congress MLA clarifies KRS Road renaming proposal for Mysuru

A Mysuru Congress MLA proposed renaming only a stretch of KRS Road after the Chief Minister while retaining Princess Road name for another stretch.

The stretch from Dasappa Circle on Jhansi Lakshmi Bai road to Sri Lakshmi Venkataramanaswamy Temple in Vontikoppal is officially recorded as Princess Road in MUDA's 2011 revised Comprehensive Development Plan and will remain so. Gowda's proposal seeks to rename only the stretch from Sri Lakshmi Venkataramanaswamy Temple in Vontikoppal to Hotel Royal Inn junction near Outer Ring Road after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, citing his contribution to healthcare facilities on that stretch. Gowda stated the entire road is popularly called KRS Road with no nameplate indicating the Princess Road section. He committed to urging the Municipal Commissioner to install a nameboard for Princess Road and a statue of Princess Kempananjammanni. Gowda emphasized Congress respect for the erstwhile royal family, noting the late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar was a Congress MP.

BJP leader and former Mayor Sandesh Swamy displayed a map claiming the road was identified as 'Princess Road' in 1921 by the City Improvement Trust Board (CITB), which later became MUDA.

Congress leaders disputed this. KPCC spokesperson M. Lakshman cited the Mysore Gazeteer, stating the road was named 'KRS road' in 1931 after completion of Krishna Raja Sagar dam. The stretch was named after KRS because it led to the dam. He noted Princess Krishnajammanni tuberculosis hospital (PKTB sanatorium) was established in 1921, predating the dam's 1931 completion.

Mysuru City Congress president R. Murthy said Congress would not press for Siddaramaiah's name if official records proved the road was already named Princess Road. Congress stated it would not name the road after Siddaramaiah in violation of existing rules.

Swamy also pointed out a rule prohibiting naming roads, parks or circles after individuals already commemorated elsewhere, noting a J.P. Nagar park in Mysore was named after Siddaramaiah during his tenure as Mayor.

Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) would follow legal procedures for any renaming, based on a representation by Chamaraja assembly MLA Harish Gowda.
