Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy urged the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly to upgrade Kovur’s 50-bed Community Health Centre (CHC) to a 100-bed Area Hospital. It is the only major healthcare facility for Kovur, Kodavalur and Vidavalur mandals, whose nearly two lakh residents face growing medical needs.

Kovur lies between two busy national highways, where frequent road accidents send emergency patients to Nellore; traffic delays have caused avoidable deaths. Reddy sought emergency care, specialist services in gynaecology, paediatrics and orthopaedics, and modern laboratory facilities. She also called for a dialysis unit at Kovur, saying the single unit at Nellore GGH is overburdened and patients face long waits or costly private treatment. The upgrade would reduce pressure on the district headquarters hospital and bring care closer to rural patients.

Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy and SPSR Nellore district collector O. Anand discussed the future of the long-defunct Kovur Cooperative Sugar Factory and pending payments to farmers and workers. They proposed handing over the factory’s 124 acres to the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) for an industrial estate, potentially creating 10,000 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect opportunities. Partner farmers were asked to cooperate, and farmer-union leaders agreed. The factory has been non-operational for over a decade; stakeholders said reopening may not be financially viable and agreed to resolve pending court cases over reopening and land through dialogue. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu approved release of ₹28 crore in pending worker dues. Prashanthi Reddy said she would convey farmers’ and labour leaders’ concerns to the Chief Minister.

Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy met IFFCO chairman Dilip Sanghani and CEO Dr. Uday Shankar in New Delhi on Tuesday, seeking support for more industrial units at the IFFCO Kisan Special Economic Zone in Kovur, Nellore district. Established in 2009 across 2,777 acres in the Kovur assembly constituency, the SEZ has infrastructure intended to attract diverse industries and generate local employment. Its location near Krishnapatnam Port and Chennai supports its potential for industrial growth.
