Heavy rain on Monday, July 6, disrupted Mumbai-Pune connectivity. Traffic on both carriageways of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune highway was suspended until further notice; flooding and landslides made several stretches impassable, including parts of Maval and Tamhini Ghat. The expressway was shut between the Connecting Link and Missing Link after a concrete pillar collapsed onto the carriageway.

A landslide near Tunnel 2 diverted Pune-bound traffic on the 13-km Khopoli-Kusgaon Missing Link from 4 am. Opened two months ago, it cuts travel distance by 6 km and travel time by 25–30 minutes.

Landslides near Thakurwadi and between Khandala and Monkey Hill affected all three tracks in the Bhor Ghat section. At least 16 trains were cancelled and nine diverted. The IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Pune. Schools and colleges closed in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar districts. Police advised commuters to postpone travel.

The Pune-Mumbai Missing Link is in its final stages, with 93% of cable installation on the Dari bridge completed; about 150 of 240 cables are installed. Officials expect work to finish by March 2026 and the bridge to open in May, reducing the route by about 6 km and saving roughly 30 minutes.

The project, commissioned by the Maharashtra government through the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to increase Pune-Mumbai Expressway capacity, began in 2019. The 19 km stretch between Khopoli exit and Kusgaon (Sinhgad Institute) includes two tunnels of 1.68 km and 8.87 km and a bridge about 181 metres high. The works are intended to shorten the ghat route by 13.3 km. Cost has risen from ₹6,900 crore in 2019 to ₹7,500 crore, partly due to rain and other reasons.

Tunnels have emergency alarms linked to a control room and cross passages every 300 metres.

• Severe delays were reported between Khopoli and Khandala, especially in the Bor Ghat section, with long queues leaving motorists stranded for hours.
• Traffic congestion began in the morning and continued through the day, mainly due to a weekend rush of families and tourists leaving Mumbai.
• A long line of vehicles was seen from the Amrutanjan Bridge to the Khopoli exit; a stretch that usually takes about 10 minutes took nearly 1.5 hours.
• The official Mumbai–Pune Expressway X handle later said around 30 minutes of congestion was reported near the Khandala Ghat Viewpoint on the Pune-bound lane due to a collision.
• The 13.3-km Missing Link project is an eight-lane, access-controlled corridor that will bypass the Lonavala–Khandala ghat section.
• It is expected to reduce the Mumbai-Pune distance by nearly 6 km, cut travel time by 25 to 30 minutes, and improve traffic flow and safety for private and commercial vehicles.
• With only a small stretch left to connect, the corridor is expected to be fully linked within four months and may open in May 2026.
