• Delhi plans to redevelop the 1.2km road from the EDM Mall foot overbridge to the Anand Vihar U-turn; bids were invited last week.
• A consultant will survey the area, map congestion points, footpaths and traffic islands, and identify permanent structures. Layout plans will cover the 1.2km road and 60-foot width, proposing traffic-flow improvements, pedestrian infrastructure, landscaping, street lighting, decorative illumination and upgraded street furniture. The study is expected to take one month; a second phase will seek approval for interventions.
• The project proposes 15.18 lane-kilometres of six-lane, 60-metre-wide road.
• A multimodal integration plan is also being finalised. Proposals include an underpass connecting the transport hub with Karkardooma, a pedestrian bridge with a travellator, improved pedestrian movement around the railway station, ISBT and RRTS station, and a new foot overbridge for commuters travelling between the railway station and Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh.

A March 27 plan proposes an underpass beneath Anand Vihar Railway Station to connect Karkardooma directly with the transport hub, a new pedestrian foot overbridge (FOB) with a travellator linking the railway station and Kaushambi side, and extending the existing FOB towards Karkardooma. Northern Railways is discussing the underpass’s feasibility with NCRTC and has assured it will provide a no-objection certificate for the existing FOB extension. Preliminary multimodal-integration discussions are underway among stakeholders.

The hub brings together Anand Vihar ISBT, Kaushambi bus depot, metro and railway stations, and the RRTS station. The existing FOB connects these transport facilities, but officials say rising commuter numbers make it inadequate. Karkardooma-side passengers currently use Master Somnath Marg or Swami Dayanand Marg; residential-colony roads are narrow and congested. Anand Vihar is also a Delhi-NCR traffic and pollution hotspot, frequently recording severe winter AQI levels.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sought ₹145 crore from the Chief Minister Development Fund (CMDF) to redevelop eight markets:

• South Moti Bagh: ₹3.9 crore; Vasant Kunj B-7: ₹3.2 crore (south zone).
• District Centre: ₹15.8 crore; A-3 Block Market, Janakpuri: ₹3.2 crore (west zone).
• Netaji Subhash Place, Pitampura: ₹52.8 crore; Deep Market, Ashok Vihar: ₹12.2 crore (Keshavpuram zone).
• Mangalam Palace Market, Rohini: ₹37.8 crore; Karkardooma: ₹17.3 crore (Shahdara south zone).

Proposed work includes road re-carpeting, footpath and parking improvements, green belts and walking plazas, civic utility upgrades, boundary walls and lighting. The proposal was presented to the chief minister at a recent meeting after earlier attempts to obtain funding through the Centre’s National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) did not materialise. Netaji Subhash Place, described as one of north Delhi’s busiest commercial and recreational hubs, is slated for common-area improvements, more greenery and levelled parking.

• DDA approved Delhi’s first transit-oriented housing scheme, Towering Heights at East Delhi Hub, Karkardooma Housing Scheme 2025, with 1,026 ready-to-launch 2BHK flats to be sold by e-auction. The project promotes mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development integrated with public transport.
• It approved redevelopment of DDA staff quarters in Safdarjung Development Area and Old Rajinder Nagar, both over 50 years old and structurally deteriorating. NBCC (India) Ltd. will be project management consultant; costs will be recovered through saleable built-up areas. DDA can also redevelop other staff colonies that have outlived their structural life.
• In Narela, DDA cleared a multi-sports integrated stadium on 30.35 hectares and an education hub on 4.33 hectares near UER-I and a proposed metro station. The hub is intended to attract universities and skill-development institutions; the stadium is expected to host national and international events and support sports tourism and local employment.
• Residents displaced by Signature View Apartments’ redevelopment will receive monthly rental assistance of ₹50,000 for HIG and ₹38,000 for MIG flat owners, with 10% annual escalation.
• Karmayogi Awaas Yojana 2025 offers government employees a 25% discount on homes in Narela.

AAP has never won Vishwas Nagar in three Delhi assembly elections. BJP’s OP Sharma won in 2013, 2015 and 2020, by more than 10,000 votes in 2015 and 16,000 in 2020. AAP has fielded local businessman Deepak Singhal, 38; Congress candidate Rajiv Chaudhary, 57, is also contesting. Sharma said he oversaw ₹8,000 crore of constituency works in five years; candidates pledged to address water and sewage problems.

The constituency has 204,780 voters: 108,057 men, 96,714 women and nine third-gender electors. It includes Preet Vihar, Anand Vihar, IP Extension, Jagriti Enclave, Swastha Vihar, Pushpanjali, Bahubali Enclave and Ram Vihar, as well as Karkardooma, Ghazipur, Hasanpur, Arya Nagar and Harijan Basti.

Residents cited damaged roads, sanitation, encroachment, parking, sewage overflow and traffic on Vikas Marg. They said the Ghazipur landfill causes foul air and polluted groundwater; landfill-flattening work has slowed. Arya Nagar residents reported dirty or interrupted water supplies, while residents raised concerns about stray cattle and mobile and chain-snatching.
