Varanasi Ring Road Updates Include Two ₹25,500 Crore Corridors

- The Varanasi Ring Road is close to 60 km long. Phase 1, a 16.55 km stretch from Harhua to Shivpur, was inaugurated in November 2018. Phase 2 is divided into packages; its Sandaha-Rewasa stretch includes a six-lane Ganga Bridge. One side of the bridge opened in mid-2025, and the second is expected to open fully by the end of 2026.
- As of July 2026, the Union Cabinet had approved two projects worth ₹25,500 crore:
- The 43.21 km Varuna Elevated Corridor will connect NH-31 with the Ring Road along the Varuna river, passing through 41 villages in Sadar and Pindra tehsils.
- The 46.03 km, six-lane Ganga Elevated Road, or Ganga Bank Corridor, will run from Vishwa Sundari Bridge to Samne Ghat Bridge, extend to Ramnagar and Namo Ghat, and connect to the Ring Road’s Ganga Bridge.
- Harhua-Sarnath plots are quoted at ₹3,500-5,000 per sq ft. Sandaha is described as comparatively affordable; Mohansarai-Barhuli is where the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway starts.
Varanasi Submits DPR for 21-Km Elevated Varuna Corridor

Varanasi has submitted a DPR for a ₹6,000-crore, four-lane elevated road along the Varuna river to ease congestion and connect NH-31 with the Ring Road.

The Detailed Project Report for a 21-km elevated road along the Varuna river has been submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The route will run from about 2 km ahead of Harahua to the Varuna-Ganga confluence near Namo Ghat. District magistrate Satyendra Kumar said NHAI engineers prepared the DPR; NHAI will build the four-lane corridor at an estimated cost of ₹6,000 crore. It will connect National Highway-31 and the Varanasi Ring Road and help decongest the city. The corridor will allow travellers arriving from Lucknow, Jaunpur and Prayagraj to reach Namo Ghat directly and take boats to Baba Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The Varuna passes through Pratap Patti, Vajidpur, Mansapur Sadar, Hukulganj and other city areas. A stretch will cross 2.5655 acres managed by the Cantonment Board Varanasi, which has referred the matter to the Ministry of Defence for approval. Board CEO Satyam Mohan confirmed the development.
