Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has proposed transferring five acres of APSRTC land at Governorpet-II bus depot in Vijayawada to UAE-based Lulu Group. Lulu Group signed an MoU with the State government to invest Rs 1,222 crore in shopping malls and hypermarkets in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, creating approximately 2,000 jobs. Government instructed Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) to hand over 13.43 acres of land on Beach Road to APIIC for leasing to Lulu Group. APIIC Managing Director Abhishek Kishore formally requested APSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao to allot the Governorpet-II land. APSRTC officials oppose the move, stating the property is strategically significant and valued at around Rs 300 crore. They said the alternative site in Gollapudi is not operationally feasible. Sources noted the proposed site has a narrow shape with a canal on one side and busy Eluru Road on the other, making it unsuitable for Lulu Group's commercial operations. A portion of the depot was previously converted into a sculpture park using iron scrap by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. The Governorpet-II depot once served as the primary bus stand before Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) was constructed in 1990.
