Mysuru Residents Threaten Protests Over BEML Layout’s Poor Amenities

Residents of Rajarajeshwari Nagar in Mysuru threatened protests over poor roads and drainage, and MUDA’s suspension of building approvals, completion reports and khatas.

Members of Rajarajeshwari Nagar Nagarika Vedike threatened protests outside the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) and BEML Employees’ House Building Cooperative Society offices over poor amenities and technical problems in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, also known as BEML Layout Second Stage. Created on 105 acres in 1992, the locality has about 1,333 sites and more than 900 houses.

Residents cited bad roads, poor drainage, flooding during heavy rain, and the lack of building-plan approvals, completion reports (CRs) and khatas. MUDA stopped approving plans, CRs and khatas and stopped accepting residents’ taxes in 2015, citing a dispute; an RTI response reportedly said there was no dispute. Residents also reported solid waste on roads and no waste-management system.

Over the preceding three months, Vedike representatives met Chamundeshwari MLA G.T. Deve Gowda, the Deputy Commissioner, MUDA Commissioner and other officials, and submitted memoranda. They sought state government intervention after MUDA and the housing society offered no solution, according to the Vedike. The locality is off Mysuru’s outer ring road, adjacent to MUDA-developed Dattagalli, and in Chamundeshwari constituency.
