NGT Rejects Residents’ Plea Against CWG Village Barat Ghar

The NGT dismissed the CWG Village residents’ plea over a DDA barat ghar, finding no evidence that construction violated environmental norms.

Key facts

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) disposed of a plea filed in April 2025 by the Commonwealth Games Village residents’ welfare association, which alleged that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) began building a barat ghar, or community hall, inside the sports complex without mandatory clearance under the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification, 2006.

At the October 9 hearing, a bench led by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel said the applicant had not shown how the project breached environmental norms or prescribed limits. The tribunal also declined to direct authorities to decide the association’s representation, finding no prima facie violation.

Built by the DDA for the 2010 Commonwealth Games near the Yamuna and Akshardham, the complex has more than 1,100 flats across 34 towers.
