Delhi government plans to hire a private consultant for a proposed elevated corridor along Najafgarh drain to ease traffic congestion. The project involves approximately 61 kilometres and is intended to improve movement on major roads across the city.

Public Works Department will appoint consultant to conduct feasibility study and prepare project plan before work begins. Corridor expected to reduce travel time, fuel consumption and vehicular emissions, while improving links with key roads.

Roads will be developed from Chhawla to Basaidarapur along both sides of drain over 27.415 kilometres, taking total to 54.83 kilometres across both banks. Additional 5.94-kilometre two-lane road will be built on left bank from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge.

Primary objective is to reduce congestion on major roads, cut travel time and fuel consumption, and lower vehicular emissions. Corridor will provide inter-connectivity with Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II (connecting to NH-9 Rohtak Road), Najafgarh Road and other key routes.

Total project cost estimated at Rs 454 crore. Paved road approximately 61 kilometres with width of 7 metres will be built along drain. Separate tracks for walking, jogging and cycling will be developed. New bridge will be constructed near Dwarka Metro Depot. Landscaping and tree plantation will be undertaken. At some junctions, Delhi Metro rail corridors will be included in study. Project planned as multi-use corridor.

Delhi’s Public Works Department has started preparing the detailed project report for a ₹453.95 crore, 1-kilometre-long road network along both sides of the Najafgarh drain. Officials plan to visit the entire stretch. Work is expected to begin in May 2026 and finish by November 2027.

The corridor will include tree planting, landscaping and street lighting. It is intended to ease congestion, improve links between rural Delhi and arterial roads, and provide an alternative intra-city route. Areas expected to benefit include Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Goyla Dairy, Dwarka, Baprola, Nilothi, Paschim Vihar, Rajouri Garden and Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Delhi’s finance expenditure committee, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved a ₹454-crore project to build a two-lane road corridor along both banks of the Najafgarh drain, with completion scheduled for November 2027. It is intended to reduce pressure on arterial roads, travel time, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, while improving links between urban and rural areas.

A 5.9-km stretch will run along the left bank from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge. From Chhawla to Basaidarapur, roads will be built on both sides for 27.4 km, bringing the total developed length across the banks to 60.7 km. The corridor will connect with Outer Ring Road at Keshopur, Inner Ring Road at Basaidarapur, Pankha Road at Vikaspuri, Najafgarh Road at Kakrola and UER-II at Dhulsiras. It will also intersect Shivaji Marg and link to NH-9/Rohtak Road, IGI Airport and Dwarka Expressway.

Expected beneficiaries include residents of Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Goyla Dairy, Dwarka, Baprola, Nilothi, Paschim Vihar and Rajouri Garden. Connectivity to Gurgaon's Sectors 104 and 110 is also expected to improve.

Delhi’s Finance Expenditure Committee approved ₹453.95 crore to develop a 60.77-km corridor along the Najafgarh Drain: a two-lane road on the left bank from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge (5.94 km), and roads on both sides from Chhawla to Basaidarapur (54.83 km). The route will connect with the Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II, Najafgarh Road and other routes. Connections at Basaidarapur, Keshopur, Vikaspuri, Kakrola and Dhulsiras will link to the Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Pankha Road, Najafgarh Road and UER-II, providing access to the airport and Dwarka Expressway. It will serve areas including Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Goyla Dairy, Dwarka, Baprola, Nilothi, Paschim Vihar and Rajouri Garden, and improve links to Gurugram Sectors 104 and 110. Plans include walking, jogging and cycling tracks, a bridge near Dwarka Metro Depot, landscaping, tree planting, lighting, signboards and drainage. Administrative approvals are targeted by March 2026, tendering by April, construction from May and completion by November 2027. The project has technical committee and Flood Control Board approval.

A four-lane reinforced cement concrete bridge over the Najafgarh drain near Badusarai village in southwest Delhi, constructed between 2019 and early 2023 as a link to Dwarka, has been unused for two years. The bridge cannot serve traffic because the irrigation and flood control (I&FC) department failed to acquire land at one end where agricultural fields block access to Nanak Heri Main Road. Residents must use an older single-lane parallel bridge that allows one vehicle at a time from either direction.

In June 2024, a multidisciplinary expert group called the situation a "blunder," noting the I&FC department constructed the bridge without advance land acquisition tie-up. The expert group recommended immediate land acquisition; however, nine months later no progress has been made. The new bridge is built one metre higher than the existing bridge, creating additional connectivity challenges.

The farmland owner at one end said authorities contacted him twice over two years but failed to follow up on acquisition formalities. The required land spans approximately 160 gajj (0.02 acres). Locals have carved a steep, dangerous makeshift path on one corner to access the bridge.

The I&FC department stated land acquisition is underway with all legal formalities being followed, expecting completion within one month of acquisition. An expert group refused a June 2024 proposal to demolish the bridge, stating the I&FC should have arranged land access before construction began.
