The Maharaj Prithu Flyover, built at a cost of Rs 852 crore and Northeast India's longest, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 10 and opened for vehicular movement on March 15. Despite the opening, commuters experienced significant traffic congestion particularly during evening hours on Saturday, with long vehicle queues at Chandmari roundabout. The roundabout became a major bottleneck with vehicles from multiple directions merging at the same point, slowing traffic flow on the elevated structure. The flyover was kept open as a pedestrian walking zone for three days after inauguration before vehicular movement began. Two police personnel managed traffic at the junction but congestion persisted during peak hours. Some commuters reported the road beneath the flyover had less congestion than the elevated stretch. Authorities were asked to review the traffic management system around Chandmari roundabout to make the flyover effective in easing area congestion.

Assam Traffic Police imposed a traffic advisory suspending vehicular movement on the existing Guwahati Chandmari Flyover from January 30, 2026 until completion of construction work.

Chandmari residents face persistent civic issues: artificial flooding from brief rains, deteriorating roads, hazardous footpaths, and unsafe electrical wiring. Two persons injured recently from contact with exposed live wires.

Flyover construction has worsened conditions. PWD (Roads) cited construction as barrier to scheduled drain desiltation. Poor drainage maintenance and haphazard project execution left main road dangerously narrow. Official statement: "Due to the ongoing flyover work, we have not been able to carry out drain cleaning, which has compounded the flooding problem."

Increased traffic on main road diverted commuters to bylanes, causing further damage to narrow streets and increased electric wire snapping incidents. Pedestrian safety at risk from uneven footpaths and unguarded construction zones. Parking spaces disappeared; sidewalks broken. Local businesses report drastically reduced customer footfall over last six months.

Large potholes in roads become invisible during rains, leading to serious injuries; dust pollution in dry weather. Residents demand immediate, well-coordinated government action to restore safety, mobility, and livability.
