Forest Land Allotted for Tata Power’s Bhivpuri Pumped Storage Project

Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure

Maharashtra allotted Tata Power 20.14 hectares of forest land in Raigad for the Bhivpuri component of its ₹13,000-crore pumped hydro project.

Key facts

The state forest department issued the allotment order on March 5 for 20.14 hectares of forest land in Raigad district for Tata Power’s Bhivpuri Off-Stream Open Loop Pumped Storage Project.

The project has two components: 1,800 MW at Shirawata in Pune district and 1,000 MW at Bhivpuri, Karjat, in Raigad district. The estimated investment is ₹13,000 crore. The pumped hydro project is intended to stabilise the electricity grid as renewable energy is integrated, supporting existing solar and wind plants with 24/7 power supply.

Environmentalist D Stalin of NGO Vanshakti criticised the allocation of forest land. Tata Power did not respond to requests for comment.
