Railway Overbridge Works Damage Dharmapuri Underground Drainage Lines

Ongoing railway overbridge construction between Bharathipuram and Vennampatti has damaged underground drainage pipelines laid under Dharmapuri Municipality’s ₹82.15-crore Phase II project.

Key facts

Underground drainage (UGD) lines laid across 14 wards under Dharmapuri Municipality’s Phase II project were damaged in Ward 31 during state highways department work on the Bharathipuram–Vennampatti railway overbridge. The ₹82.15-crore UGD project began nearly eight months ago and covers 46.5 km with 1,225 pipes.

Bharathipuram residents alleged poor planning and lack of coordination. They said the 66-foot road in Ward 31 had been dug for UGD work after being laid a year earlier, and pipelines were then disturbed to accommodate 13 railway overbridge pillars and drainage construction. Residents also reported broken household drainage connections, while waterlines had been repaired. They warned planned electricity-line work could disrupt electricity and water connections.

Municipal Commissioner R. Sekar said no complaint had been received; engineers would inspect the lines and issue a notice to the contractor if damage was confirmed.
