• Chief minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the redeveloped Azadpur DTC terminal, which can handle 116 buses across 21 routes, and flagged off 40 low-floor electric buses.
• Gupta said the administration had added 1,400 electric buses in eight months. The new buses have air-conditioning, CCTV, panic buttons and real-time GPS tracking.
• Terminal facilities include modern waiting areas, shaded platforms, a baby-feeding room, lockers, bio-digesters, CCTV, solar panels, digital screens, signage and a public-address system.
• Azadpur is the first completed terminal in a plan to modernise five depots—Nehru Place, Najafgarh, Azadpur, Mehrauli and Narela—with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The agencies signed an MoU in 2022.
• Gupta also opened a district social welfare office near Azadpur Mandi serving 15 Assembly constituencies. The ₹2.14-crore building will process pensions, scholarships and other schemes through the e-District portal, replacing offices previously housed in a Rohini school and supporting Direct Benefit Transfer delivery.

Delhi Traffic Police launched pilot Mobile Traffic Units across three ranges to enforce traffic rules and increase police visibility. Two stretches in each range were selected:

• Central: Delhi University and ISBT Kashmere Gate
• Northern: Bhagwan Mahavir Marg and Azadpur Mandi
• Eastern: NH 24 and Vikas Marg

Delhi Traffic Police Deputy Commissioner Nishant Gupta proposed rerouting northbound interstate buses from Kashmere Gate ISBT to the Dehradun Expressway via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), which connects before NH-44 near Sonepat. The proposal was sent on Thursday to the Delhi government’s transport department and the Public Works Department (PWD), aiming to ease chronic congestion on Ring Road and adjoining north Delhi corridors.

Currently, buses travel towards Sonepat via Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and NH-44, contributing to jams at Chandgi Ram Akhara and GT Karnal Bypass, with spillover congestion around Delhi University’s North Campus and Azadpur Mandi. The proposed route would take buses from the ISBT along Ring Road, GT Road and through Shastri Park to the EPE and Dehradun Expressway.

The road-safety NGO Guru Hanuman Society of Bharat studied the existing route and raised concerns with authorities. Its president and urban transport expert Atul Ranjeet Kumar supported shifting intercity bus traffic out of the city core.

Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra has directed officials to revive the long-stalled Tikri-Khampur wholesale fruit and vegetable market project. The project was conceived in 1997 to help decongest Azadpur Mandi.

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi inaugurated the six-lane, 1.12-km Punjabi Bagh Flyover on January 2, 2025. It bypasses three traffic lights and connects Azadpur to Najafgarh via Punjabi Bagh, Basai Darapur and Paschim Vihar, improving travel between Azadpur, Raja Garden, Paschim Vihar, Najafgarh and ESI Hospital.

The flyover is expected to save 11 lakh litres of fuel annually, reduce pollution by an amount equivalent to planting 65,000 trees and save commuters 40,000 hours daily. Atishi said it would ease traffic for more than 3 lakh people; the article also states that around 3.45 lakh people are expected to use it daily. It complements the Moti Nagar Flyover, converted from a single-lane to a double-lane structure in March 2024.
