NGT approves NHAI Ayodhya Nagar Bypass tree felling in Bhopal

India's National Green Tribunal cleared the Ayodhya Nagar Bypass Project to fell 7,871 trees, finding the centrally-approved plan involves necessary environmental compliance.

The NGT bench (Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Sheo Kumar Singh, A Senthil Vel, Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi) approved felling 7,871 trees for the 16.5-km Asharam Tiraha-to-Ratnagiri Tiraha Ayodhya Bypass Project on NH-46 and NH-146 in Bhopal. The project involves six-laning service roads and links state and national highways. Original proposal involved 9,946 trees; the centrally-empowered committee reduced this to 7,871 after September 2025 meeting, comprising 5,188 timber and 2,683 non-timber trees. Conditions: NHAI must plant over 80,000 saplings (10+ times replacement), preserve rare or threatened species, comply with Madhya Pradesh tree protection law, ensure compensatory afforestation, green highway policy, and transplantation. Technical committee including forest, municipal, horticulture, and pollution board members will monitor plantations for 15 years. NHAI directed to submit deposit reports; State Pollution Control Board to track fund utilisation year-wise for five years. Project deemed vital importance; connects Gwalior, Raisen, Vidisha, Jabalpur, Betul, Indore to Bhopal; reduces travel time, accidents, and city congestion; removes three accident blackspots (Best-Price junction, People's Mall junction, Ratnagiri tiraha).
