Kochi Orders Inspection Squad, Urges Water and Bridge Works

Onmanorama · · Infrastructure

Kochi ordered an inspection team on homelessness and child begging, while officials called for urgent water-supply and bridge works and a parking probe.

Key facts

At a District Development Committee meeting on September 28, 2026, Collector G Priyanka said an urgent inspection team would be formed to address homeless people gathering in public spaces and children begging at traffic signals across Kochi. It will include Corporation, Police and District Child Protection Officer representatives; subsequent action will follow. MLA T J Vinod raised the issue and called for urgent resolution of water scarcity in Vathuthala, Cheranalloor, Pachalam and Ayyappankavu. MLA Uma Thomas urged swift completion of land acquisition for the Athani bridge near the Collectorate. The Collector directed City Police to investigate congestion caused by illegal parking between Collectorate Junction and IMG Junction. ADM K Manoj, Sub Collector Granthe Sai Krishna, DFO O P Karthik and District Planning Officer T Jyothimol also attended.

Thrissur Medical College Approach Roads Set for Major Revamp

Onmanorama · · Infrastructure

Thrissur Government Medical College’s narrow roads, unchanged since 1982, are slated for a major revamp amid congestion affecting emergency access and campus operations.

Key facts

Thrissur Government Medical College’s approach roads, unchanged since the foundation stone was laid on 30 April 1982, are set for a major revamp. The single-lane routes are 800 metres to 1.5 kilometres long; traffic bottlenecks delay ambulances and disrupt campus activities. The campus spans 350 acres and receives over 10,000 visitors daily. Congestion is expected to increase when three facilities open in early January: a super-speciality block, emergency critical care unit and mother-and-child block, built for an estimated ₹600 crore.

The 800-metre OP road from Velappaya, beyond the Mulankunnathukavu overbridge, is too narrow for two vehicles to pass safely. The 500-metre road from Athani overbridge to the old Medical College road is under six feet wide in places. Public transit through the campus raises security concerns and disrupts studies. Proposed measures include widening roads, developing ring roads, dedicated parking and rerouting traffic.

The two hospitals’ outpatient departments see about 3,350 patients daily; casualty and emergency departments receive another 1,000. The daycare unit treats about 100 patients daily, while wards hold 1,641 inpatients and intensive care houses 148. The college serves Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad districts and houses Kerala University of Health Sciences headquarters.

Kariyad Residents Propose Ropeway Link to Kochi Airport

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

A consortium of 30–35 Kariyad residents has proposed studying a CIAL-managed airport ropeway as an alternative to extending Kochi Metro to the terminals.

Key facts

A consortium of 30–35 Kariyad residents submitted a proposal to Chief Minister V D Satheesan seeking a technical, financial and operational feasibility study of a CIAL-managed urban ropeway to Kochi airport. It does not oppose Kochi Metro or its proposed extension towards Angamaly, but suggests separating airport connectivity from the metro extension.

The proposal envisages a roughly 4-km ropeway between Athani and the airport, potentially serving terminals from a metro station near the Taj Hotel or airport roundabout. It suggests reducing the metro extension under consideration from about 18.09 km to around 10 km, continuing from Athani along the National Highway to Angamaly. The consortium estimates potential savings of ₹2,250 crore, alongside reduced infrastructure needs, land acquisition and displacement.

It cites Varanasi’s 4-km ropeway, estimated at about ₹600 crore including 15 years of operating costs, compared with metro construction costs of around ₹350 crore per km. The airport’s solar generation could help power the ropeway. The proposal also cites systems in Bolivia and Mexico. Residents raised concerns about renewed displacement of families, including some who relocated to Kariyad after losing land and homes during earlier airport acquisition in Avanavcode. The idea originated with Kariyad autorickshaw driver Johnson Joseph; the consortium said the Chief Minister showed interest.
