The Madras High Court ordered inspections and document checks for 33 Anaikatti resorts, directing authorities to close establishments lacking valid permissions.

Key facts

On September 18, a special Madras High Court Division Bench hearing environment and forest cases directed Coimbatore district authorities to inspect and verify documents for 33 Anaikatti resorts, including 23 allegedly omitted from earlier inspections. The list submitted by Chennai-based petitioner S. Muralidharan includes eight resorts the court ordered closed in August for lacking required permissions, and two that obtained permissions on July 1, 2026. The August order was issued by Justices N. Sathish Kumar and K. Rajasekar.

Authorities must take action under law against illegal resorts and commercial establishments. Resorts may continue operating if they produce valid licences and permissions; documents issued by an incompetent authority cannot justify continued operations. Establishments lacking valid permissions, including bed-and-breakfast businesses, must close.

On State Highway 164 (Coimbatore–Anaikatti Road), metal beam crash barriers were removed at four locations to help wildlife cross safely. Rumble strips were installed at five ghat-section locations, alongside warning signs at identified wildlife crossing points.
