An official said notices were served at least twice to Amit Banerjee, director of Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, for hearings on June 30 and July 7; no one appeared, and demolition was ordered. Abhishek Banerjee is the company’s CEO and was a director from April 2012 to January 2014.

Banerjee said the office stood on privately owned land and that TMC had approved plans and legal documents to present in court. He said a representative attended a July 15 hearing but authorities could not provide the complaint letter underlying proceedings. TMC alleged BJP workers vandalised the office; BJP denied involvement and opposed illegal construction. The BJP fielded Abhijit Das against Banerjee in 2024; Das lost by 710,930 votes. In May, Kolkata Municipal Corporation issued notices to the company over alleged illegal construction in Kolkata buildings linked to Banerjee; his parents challenged a notice concerning Shantiniketan, 188A Harish Mukherjee Road, in the Calcutta High Court.

Police and central forces carried out the demolition in the presence of officials from the Fire Services, Block Development Office and Block Land and Land Reforms Office.
