More than 400 devotees were rescued in Alandi on July 6 after the Indrayani River inundated parts of the town. Rescues included 220 people from the Dnyaneshwari Mandir area, 100 from Indrayani Nagari, 60 from Thakurbuwa Mandap and 28 from Gopalpura. About 150 cattle were also moved to safety.

All four bridges into Alandi were submerged. Pune district officials declared the town inaccessible ahead of the July 8 Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi procession and urged devotees already travelling to halt. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Pune, warning of heavy rain. Officials advised people to stay away from the riverbed, ghats and closed bridges.

Heavy rain affected Pune district on Monday; one landslide killed three members of a family and road and rail traffic was disrupted. Twenty-seven revenue circles recorded more than 65 mm of rain; Maval received the highest total, 237.3 mm.

On Monday, Pune district administration urged warkaris and devotees not to enter Alandi after the overflowing Indrayani River submerged all four bridges leading into the temple town. Hundreds of warkaris were stranded.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said slaughterhouses will not be allowed in Alandi, Pune district, and directed the removal of the abattoir land reservation from the town’s Development Plan. Alandi houses a temple of poet-saint Dnyaneshwar and is a starting point for annual warkari pilgrimages to the Vitthal temple in Pandharpur.

PMC decided to remove the BRTS corridor between Sathe Biscuit Chowk and Chandrama Hotel (Deccan College Chowk) on Alandi Road to ease traffic congestion. On April 20, senior road department officials including superintendent engineer Ashish Jadhav and executive engineer Sanjay Dharav inspected the site for feasibility. Removing the dedicated BRTS lane will increase effective road width, improve vehicular speed, and save fuel and travel time. Former MLA Sunil Tingre and corporator Suhas Tingre had demanded removal, citing accidents and congestion. The BRTS stretch from Sangamwadi Bridge to Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk is about 550 metres; the section from Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk to Deccan College Chowk is about 1.5 km. Flyover work is ongoing at both ends. Parts near Sathe Biscuit Chowk have already been dismantled. The administration will decide based on local demands. Portions of the BRT lane on Ahmednagar Road have already been removed in the last two years due to poor utilisation and safety concerns.

Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi directed departments to complete development and infrastructure works on the Dehu and Alandi Ashadhi Wari Palkhi routes by May 15. He ordered immediate demolition of the old Nira bridge and expedited road widening in Alandi municipal limits. Ambulances must be on standby during the return Wari.

The 5 km Dehu–Dehu Road stretch is to be widened on priority: 3 km by the Public Works Department and 2 km by Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The administration will seek a no-objection certificate from Dehu Road Cantonment Board. A 500 metre road leading to the Dehu temple will be completed under the urban development scheme.

Officials will inspect Akurdi, the Palkhi’s first stop, and arrange temporary space. Metro work between Kalbhor Nagar and Akurdi must finish before the procession. The halt area at Loni Kalbhor will be expanded. Continuous night lighting is required from Sancheti to Fergusson College Road; obstacles must be cleared from the Borawake Mala–Saswad bypass, and barricades installed at Dive Ghat. Cranes will accompany the procession to address vehicle breakdowns.
