Wadsa–Gadchiroli Rail Line’s First 20 km Nears Opening
Swarajya · · Infrastructure
The Wadsa–Gadchiroli broad-gauge line’s first 20 km section is expected to open by mid-May, with the full route targeted for commissioning early next year.
Key facts
The South East Central Railway expects the 20 km stretch between Wadsa (Desaiganj) and Armori to be commissioned by the end of April or mid-May. Rail travel between the towns is expected to take about 30 minutes, compared with nearly an hour by road.
The full Wadsa–Gadchiroli route spans roughly 52–56 km and is funded equally by the central and state governments. About 220 hectares were acquired. Forest clearances, wildlife protection requirements and difficult terrain have raised construction costs. Work continues on the Armori–Gadchiroli section, with the full line targeted for commissioning early next year.
The railway is expected to carry iron ore, coal, finished steel, forest produce and agricultural goods, support planned steel-industry investments, and improve access to education, healthcare and markets for tribal communities.
