Madurai Corporation Uses Form 7 to Recover Property Tax Arrears
thehindu · · Regulatory
Madurai Corporation has begun serving Form 7 notices to long-term property-tax defaulters, including a Villapuram marriage hall owing ₹39.56 lakh.
Key facts
Madurai Corporation has started serving Form 7 notices, which can lead to attachment of immovable property and public auction, to recover long-overdue property taxes. Taxes are payable twice yearly, for April–September and October–March.
A private marriage hall on Aruppukottai Main Road in Villapuram, Ward 91, Zone 5, had not paid property tax since 2022–23. Its arrears for the first half of 2026 totalled ₹39,56,002. Deputy Commissioner Rajaram led officials who served and pasted a notice on the premises on Wednesday. A similar notice was issued to an automobile showroom owner in Ward 72.
Commissioner Gaurav Kumar had directed officials to collect taxes without harassing the public or causing undue delay. Tax can be paid online or at collection centres. The Corporation is also fining buildings for construction violations or deviations, failure to implement solid-waste management, and delayed tax payments. In June and July, it collected over ₹20 lakh in fines for smoking, spitting or urinating in public spaces and dumping waste at unauthorised spots.
Madurai Demolishes K.K. Nagar Entrance Arch Following High Court Direction
thehindu · · Infrastructure
Madurai district officials demolished the Periyar Thorana Vaayil arch in K.K. Nagar on July 18, 2026, following a Madras High Court direction to remove traffic-obstructing arches.
Key facts
Madurai District Administration began demolishing the Periyar Thorana Vaayil entrance arch in K.K. Nagar at about 12:30 a.m. on July 19, following Madras High Court directions. Police, ambulance and medical staff, Fire and Rescue Services personnel and other officials were deployed; the nearby stretch was cordoned off and closed to traffic for safety.
The court had directed Madurai Corporation and other authorities to remove the K.K. Nagar arch and other arches hindering traffic. The public interest litigation also sought removal of arches near MGR Bus Stand in Mattuthavani, on the Therkuvasal–Airport road near Villapuram, and on Theni Road near Virattipathu. The petition said traffic had increased manifold over 15 years as markets, bus stands, industrial estates and the High Court became operational. It argued the arches occupied substantial road space, created bottlenecks and, along with unauthorised parking, worsened congestion and road-safety risks.
In February 2025, an earthmover operator was killed when part of the Nakkeerar Thorana Vaayil arch near MGR Bus Stand collapsed onto the vehicle during demolition.
Madras High Court Orders Removal of Madurai Traffic-Hindering Arches
thehindu · · Infrastructure
The Madras High Court ordered Madurai Corporation and other authorities to remove the K.K. Nagar entrance arch and other traffic-obstructing arches within three months.
Key facts
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed Madurai Corporation and other authorities to remove the K.K. Nagar entrance arch and other arches hindering traffic within three months. The order followed a 2019 petition by M. Saravanan concerning arches near MGR bus stand in Mattuthavani, on the Therkuvasal–Airport road near Villapuram, and on Theni road near Virattipathu.
The State told the court that the Mattuthavani arch had been removed and a tender floated for the K.K. Nagar arch, which would be removed after the elections. In September 2024, the court had ordered the removal within six months of Nakkeerar Thorana Vaayil at Mattuthavani and Periyar Thorana Vaayil at K.K. Nagar, while allowing authorities to install bigger arches.
In February 2025, an earthmover operator was killed when part of the Mattuthavani arch fell during demolition. Police booked the contractor and Corporation officials for negligence.
Madurai’s Therkuvasal Railway Overbridge Crumbles as Replacement Takes Years
The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
Madurai’s 1989 Therkuvasal railway overbridge shows structural damage, while a parallel replacement is expected to take at least three years.
Key facts
- The 500-metre-long, 7.5-metre-wide, two-lane Therkuvasal Railway Over Bridge, built in 1989, connects Therkuvasal with Villapuram and carries nearly 10,000 vehicles daily, including traffic linking Madurai airport and Aruppukottai.
- Parapet walls have collapsed in several places, exposing steel reinforcement; vegetation grows beneath the bridge, and sections underneath have collapsed. Vehicle breakdowns frequently cause congestion.
- Residents have sought repairs for years. The State Highways Department has started steps to build a parallel bridge, which is expected to take at least three years. Residents are calling for immediate strengthening, patchwork repairs, parapet restoration and reinforcement of the underside.
- A union representative said roads could be widened and cited a Madras High Court order allowing removal of the Villapuram arch. The State Highways Department said it would examine the concerns and take appropriate measures.
- The Apollo junction grade separator is complete, and Goripalayam flyover works are ongoing.
Palanganatham Bridge’s Second Arm Opens After 19 Years
thehindu · · Infrastructure
The ₹18.37 crore second arm of Madurai’s Palanganatham road overbridge has opened, linking western areas with TVS Nagar, Jaihindpuram and eastern destinations.
Key facts
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the Palanganatham road overbridge connecting Madakulam, TVS Nagar and Jaihindpuram by video conference on May 29, 2025. Sanctioned in 2006 at an estimated ₹30 crore, construction began in 2011 at an estimated ₹33 crore. The bridge arm connecting Madakulam and TVS Nagar, with a limited-use subway, was completed in 2015; work on the Jaihindpuram arm was suspended after residents challenged land acquisition in court. NABARD and the State Highways’ Rural Roads Wing acquired land after the legal dispute was settled. The second arm was inaugurated in November 2022 and completed on April 30, 2025, at a cost of ₹18.37 crore. The 730-metre structure has 47 piers, 51 spans, a subway, service roads and a stormwater drainage channel. It connects western areas including Palanganatham, Tirupparankundram and Kalavasal with TVS Nagar, Jaihindpuram, Villapuram, Avaniapuram and Madurai airport, easing congestion on arterial roads.
