Willingdon Island Revival Seen as Key to Cochin Port Growth

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

A seminar called for a redevelopment plan for Willingdon Island and better use of port infrastructure and land to boost revenue and employment.

Key facts

A seminar organised by the Cochin Port Employees Organisation (CPEO) said diversifying operations and comprehensively revitalising Willingdon Island are essential to Cochin Port’s growth, revenue and employment. Held during the concluding programme of CPEO’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, it called for a redevelopment plan for Willingdon Island and optimum use of port infrastructure and land at Puthuvype and Vallarpadam.

Participants said the start of operations at Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal had left assets and operations on Willingdon Island underused. They called for scientific assessment of existing land, berths, road-rail connectivity and other infrastructure for cargo handling, logistics, coastal shipping, cruise tourism and marine industries; provision of wharf cranes; and maximising Cochin Port Container Freight Station capacity.

The seminar sought targets for capacity utilisation, revenue and job creation for port-land projects including Petronet LNG, Multi-User Liquid Terminal and Vallarpadam LPG terminal. Former industry minister P Rajeeve inaugurated the seminar and said Cochin Port’s revival and growth were closely linked to Keralam’s economic development.

Land Disputes Stall Kochi Water Metro’s Thevara Terminal

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

Land acquisition disagreements at Thevara have stalled a proposed Water Metro terminal, while plans for a Vallarpadam maintenance yard also require a new site.

Key facts

Kochi Water Metro’s expansion to the western region is stalled by land issues at Thevara. Nearly five acres owned by KURTC at its Thevara boat yard are earmarked for a multimodal hub. KWML sought about two acres or potentially the entire parcel, but KSRTC is demanding market rates, which the transport department has yet to approve.

The terminal was intended to connect water transport with city buses and serve Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Kumbalam and Edakochi, with a feeder service linking Kadavanthra and the South region. Delayed routes include Thevara–Ernakulam–Willingdon Island and Thevara–Kumbalam–Edakochi. KWML has completed 12 terminals and operates six routes: High Court–Fort Kochi, High Court–Vypeen, Vyttila–Kakkanad, High Court–South Chittoor, South Chittoor–Cheranelloor and High Court–Willingdon Island–Mattancherry.

A planned maintenance yard at Vallarpadam was dropped after the Central government allotted the surveyed, five-acre government site to Cochin Shipyard following its intervention. An alternative is being sought. A proposed site of over five acres at KINFRA was rejected because Kozhichira bund prevents boats reaching it.
