Tirunelveli Accelerates Drain Desilting Ahead of Northeast Monsoon
The Hindu · · Infrastructure
Tirunelveli officials are clearing canals and storm drains, including routes serving more than 500 families, before the northeast monsoon arrives.
Key facts
With the northeast monsoon expected within a fortnight, Tirunelveli district administration and the Corporation are desilting irrigation canals, storm drains and drainage channels to reduce flood risk, focusing on areas affected by the 36-hour downpour of December 2023. Relief camps are also being identified.
TP Solar has begun desilting about 6 km of the Palayam Channel, which originates at Pazhavoor check-dam, irrigates over 10,000 acres and carries rainwater to the Tamirabharani. Canals draining Tirunelveli Town and nearby areas into Nainarkulam are being cleared at a cost of ₹5 lakh. India Cements is undertaking desilting of 4 km of the Tirunelveli Channel, from Thatchanallur to Kurichchikulam.
Commissioner Monika Rana inspected work at Kakkan Nagar, Ward 5, where a storm drain flows into Pillaiyankulam canal at Keezhanaththam. Blockage could affect over 500 families. Desilting across all four Corporation zones was nearing completion, with all clogged drains and canals due to be cleared before the first week of October. Fire and Rescue Services, police, public health, public works, local bodies and TANGEDCO were given flood-response instructions.
Tirunelveli MP Seeks Modernisation of Tirunelveli–Shencottai Railway Stations
The Hindu · · Infrastructure
MP C. Robert Bruce has asked the Railways to modernise stations on the Tirunelveli–Shencottai section with passenger-friendly amenities and operational upgrades.
Key facts
On September 4, 2026, Tirunelveli MP C. Robert Bruce submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Railways seeking modernisation of stations on the Tirunelveli–Shencottai section. He said Tirunelveli Town, Pettai, Cheranmahadevi, Kaarukurichi, Veeravanallur, Kallidaikurichi, Keezha Aambur, Azhwarkurichi, Ranavasamudram, Keezha Kadayam and Paavoorchathram lack adequate amenities. Except for Ambasamudram, stations on the section are underdeveloped, with issues including inadequate seating, poor fencing and a lack of proper concrete flooring. Bruce said Sengulam, Panagudi and Dhanuvachapuram stations under the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division have better amenities, and urged the Madurai Division of Southern Railway to act.
Requested improvements include covered, full-length high-level concrete platforms with grippy tiles; ramps, tactile paving and double-height handrails; upgraded station-master buildings, ticket counters, digital announcements and coach indicators; compound walls and proper entry and exit points. He also sought loop lines and advanced interlocking at Tirunelveli Town, black-topped station access roads, illuminated parking for two-wheelers and cars, bio-toilets with adequate water, CCTV, LED high-mast lights and solar-powered LED lights.
