West Bengal has deemed the Tajpur deep-sea port unviable and plans to build it at Dadanpatrabar, while advancing maritime investments and Kolkata’s Water Metro link.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the Tajpur deep-sea port was unviable because government land was unavailable. The State plans to develop the port at Dadanpatrabar, about 10 km away, where it has around 1,700 acres and could acquire more. The government is open to a revenue-sharing model with the Centre.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) exited the project. It received a provisional Letter of Intent to Award in October 2022 as the L1 bidder; the previous government issued a fresh Request for Proposal in December last year after scrapping the first tender process.
Kolkata will become the 18th city connected to the Water Metro network, which has been implemented at 17 locations.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Adhikari reviewed a ₹19,209 crore maritime investment pipeline through 2031 covering ports, inland waterways, shipbuilding, logistics and port-led industrialisation. The projects are expected to generate more than 62,500 direct and indirect jobs.
