Champai Soren Detained Ahead of Protest at Ranchi’s RIMS-2 Site

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren was placed under house arrest before a Nagri protest over land designated for the proposed RIMS-2 hospital.

Key facts

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren was placed under house arrest at his Ranchi residence ahead of his ‘Hal Joto-Ropa Ropo’ programme at Nagri, the proposed site of RIMS-2. Police said the measure was preventive; thousands of villagers were expected to attend.

Police and administrative officers were deployed at 15 locations in Nagri Mauja and nearby areas. Two temporary jails were set up at Birsa Munda Stadium and Plus-2 High School in Kanke, with water cannons, rubber bullets, Vajra vehicles and fire tenders arranged. Prohibitory orders in Nagri began on August 20 and were to remain for two months.

Villagers say no construction has taken place on the acquired land and claim a natural right to it. The Nagri Jamin Bachao Sangharsh Samiti is organising a protest, with nearby farmers invited. Babulal Marandi and Bandhu Tirkey have supported the villagers. The 102-acre RIMS-2 site was initially identified at Sukurhutu in Kanke, then shifted to Nagri after a dispute. The planned hospital is described as a 2,600-bed super-specialty facility intended to be Asia’s largest.
