Sikkarayapuram Quarries Considered Backup Drinking Water Source for Chennai

Three abandoned quarries in Sikkarayapuram and Mel Ayanambakkam could provide Chennai a 600 Mcft backup drinking water source during shortages.

A Care Earth Trust report prepared for the Department of Geology and Mining found that three abandoned quarries across 38.46 hectares in Sikkarayapuram and Mel Ayanambakkam can hold about 600 Mcft—more than Kannankottai Thervoykandigai lake’s 500 Mcft capacity. The lake held 422 Mcft on January 29. A field irrigation channel from Chembarambakkam lake carries rainfall runoff into the quarries, which can fill to ground level almost every year. A pre-monsoon Trust analysis estimated 495 Mcft in the pits.

The Water Resources Department built a drain from Chembarambakkam lake to the quarries, and Metro Water interconnected the pits and drain. It drew quarry water during droughts in 2017, 2019 and 2023; pumping arrangements were created in 2017. Water can be sent to the Chembarambakkam treatment plant and supplied to Chennai during shortages. Kancheepuram district administration will fence the quarries using the Mining Department’s Green Fund.
