Pollution Board Orders Action to Protect Shikaripalya Lake

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board’s Anekal Environmental Officer directed the Hulimangala Gram Panchayat Development Officer to prevent sewage, solid waste and debris from entering Shikaripalya Lake and submit an action-taken report. The letter warned that penal provisions under the Water Act could be invoked.

On June 22, 2026, environmental officers inspected the lake with the PDO, panchayat members and residents. They found dead fish, sewage entering from the southern side through a stormwater drain, and solid waste at several points along the boundary. Water samples were sent to the Central Laboratory for analysis.

The lake is at Survey No. 110, Maragondanahalli village, Hulimangala Gram Panchayat, Jigani Hobli, Anekal Taluk, Bengaluru Urban district. It covers around 18 acres and 39 guntas and is maintained by the gram panchayat. The National Green Tribunal has taken cognisance of encroachment and contamination concerns in Original Application No. 155 of 2022, following a residents’ complaint.
