Paramathi Velur Residents Seek Government College and Fair Betel Prices

Residents in Namakkal’s Paramathi Velur constituency seek a government college, better municipal facilities and remunerative prices for betel leaves.

Key facts

Paramathi Velur, about 24 km from Namakkal town, was formed in 2008 and covers Paramathi Velur taluk and parts of Tiruchengode and Namakkal taluks, including Vengarai, Pandamangalam and Pothanur. More than 80% of residents cultivate sugarcane, betel leaves, bananas and other crops. Over 100 jaggery units operate in Paramathi Velur, Jedarpalayam, Solasiramani and Pandamangalam. The constituency was won by AIADMK in 2011 and 2021.

Residents want two or more town panchayats merged into municipalities to improve facilities. Students seek a government college and a competitive-exam knowledge centre; they currently travel to aided colleges in Pothanur or colleges in Tiruchengode, Namakkal and Karur. Betel farmers say middlemen limit prices and rising cultivation costs are pushing them to switch crops. They want the government to set a betel-leaf price and secure a GI tag.

AIADMK’s sitting MLA S. Sekar, former MLA K.S. Moorthy (DMK), A. Nandha Kumar (TVK) and M. Aravind (NTK) are contesting.
